Carlton Keighley named Secondary School of the Year at T&A Education Awards

Carlton Keighley is celebrating after being crowned Secondary School of the Year at this years T&A Education Awards, recognising an exceptional journey of transformation over the past six years.

The award highlights the sustained improvement achieved across the school community and celebrates the commitment, ambition and resilience shown by students, staff, families and the wider community.

Once identified in Ofsted’s Stuck Schools research, Carlton Keighley has since undergone a significant period of change. It is now a thriving and oversubscribed school where students are supported to achieve strong outcomes, build confidence and feel a genuine sense of belonging.

Mark Turvey, Head of Carlton Keighley, proudly said:

As someone who is a big advocate for Keighley, it is amazing to be able to bring some positive news to the town and to be able to shine a spotlight on the wonderful community we serve.”

The school’s progress is evident across all areas of school life.

  • Student numbers have increased from 582 in 2019 to 820 in 2025
  • Carlton Keighley is now oversubscribed through first-choice applications
  • Attendance has risen to 92.4 per cent, placing the school in the top 40 per cent nationally
  • Behaviour and school culture were praised during a second consecutive Good Ofsted inspection earlier this year

Academic outcomes have also shown marked improvement. Maths results have risen by 12 per cent, while reading ages have increased by an average of 19 months within a year. The proportion of students identified as functionally illiterate has reduced by 31 per cent, reflecting the impact of targeted support and a strong focus on literacy across the curriculum.

This award marks another important milestone in Carlton Keighley’s journey and reinforcing our school’s growing reputation across the region.
